Report by Liz Green.
I can vouch for the awfulness of the weather in the Lakes on Saturday. My running partner from Wells, Helen Rutter, and I did the walking-wounded class in the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon. The hail on the first ridge was so horrendous I thought my legs were being torn to shreds - had to put on overtrousers to stop the pain. A lot of people either did not start or didn't get very far and turned back because of the conditions.
Numbers being lower than anticipated, there was an early mass start on day two, instead of a chasing start for the leaders and later mass start for the foot soldiers, which meant we all got back to Coniston and Wilf's Cafe's excellent bean stew, cakes and gallons of hot tea, sooner than we might have, to fortify us for the long journey home.
Fortunately it was mostly dry at the overnight camp - Stool End Farm again- so all the wet clothes dried on the fencing before bedtime and on Sunday the wind had dropped which made life much easier. In true Saunders fashion, the portaloos arrived three hours after we did, but there was a 'proper' campsite 15 mins down the road which made life easier, as did the traditional sale of beer and milk for competitors.
A few runners in one of the classes complained that a couple of checkpoints on day one were either in the wrong place or not there at all and retired. In other words, typical Saunders!
It was good to see a familiar face from Weston; I hope Nick and his partner did well.
